Opening Hook:
“I love Jesus, but I don’t do church.”
It’s a phrase that’s become increasingly common — and in some cases, understandable. But is it biblical? Is it spiritually sustainable? Today, let’s unpack the real question: Do you really need to go to church?
The Honest Truth
Let’s be clear — going to church doesn’t save you. Salvation comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9), not church attendance. So why bother? Is church just tradition? A box to check? Or is it something deeper?
️ What the Bible Says
1. Hebrews 10:24–25 (ESV)
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together… but encouraging one another…”
The early church met regularly for fellowship, teaching, prayer, and communion (Acts 2:42). The Bible isn’t vague — gathering matters. Not for ritual, but for relationship.
♂️♀️ Why People Stop Going
Let’s acknowledge the real reasons many walk away:
-
Church hurt or hypocrisy
-
Spiritual abuse
-
Feeling judged or unwelcome
-
Burnout from serving
-
Belief that online sermons are “enough”
These aren’t excuses. They’re experiences. But the answer to bad community isn’t no community — it’s healthy community.
So… Why Go?
Here are a few key reasons:
✅ 1. Accountability
A strong church community helps you grow in holiness and stay on mission. Proverbs 27:17 — “Iron sharpens iron.”
✅ 2. Corporate Worship
There’s power in singing, praying, and hearing the Word together. Jesus said, “Where two or three gather in my name, I am there with them.” (Matthew 18:20)
✅ 3. Spiritual Covering
God often uses pastors, elders, and spiritual leaders to guide and protect His people.
✅ 4. Service & Purpose
You have spiritual gifts that are meant to bless others (1 Corinthians 12). Church isn’t just a place you go — it’s a body you belong to.
But What About Online Church?
Streaming sermons can supplement your walk — but they can’t fully replace the embodied, real-life church. Watching a fire on TV isn’t the same as sitting near it. You might get light, but you’ll miss the warmth.
